Finally, our landlord got back to us: he’s standing firm on the no pet rule. I am perhaps unreasonably upset. I mean, it’s not the end of the world. But I’m very disappointed. I can see why the landlord wants no pets – how is he to know we aren’t going to get the biggest dog on planet Earth and then grind all his turds into the carpet? Then again, how does he know we won’t do the same with Husband’s turds? We might have to start, now that I no longer have a reason to make nice with the landlord.

That’s a bummer. Don’t give up the dream. Someday, when you own your place, you can have as many pets as you want.
If it’s the size he’s worried about, you could get him to give you permission in writing that covers one small dog, or even specify the exact breed for you, as you’re planning on a Miniature Schnauzer that’ll only be around 15 lbs.
Or just start looking for a new place. Note that many of them will say “no pets” but if you point out that you’re planning on a small dog they’ll make exceptions. Our last three landlords have done that.
I got a puppy a year and a half ago and luckily there was no problem with having a pup where I live. One day you will be able to have a pet, don’t worry!
