Pyrrhic Victory
I know it’s stupid to get worked up over people being stupid on the internet, but sometimes I can’t help myself. Like tonight. I read a bit of a blog by a person with all kinds of mental problems who - this is the forehead-smacking part - takes enormous pride in being able to outsmart and defeat her therapists.
Yes, congratulations, Miserable Fucked Up Person, you have succeeded in thwarting the well meaning efforts of people who want only to help you be happier. It must be rewarding to get to feel so superior. Please, continue to ignore the fact that the only person you’re defeating is yourself.
Self sabotage: it’s what’s for dinner.

Are they paying the therapist, just so she can outsmart them?
Or is this a court mandated thing?
Either way, sounds like a case for… PRISON ISLAND!

Huh - normally at that point you realize therapy isn’t working for you.
It is an interesting concept though. In a way that ties my brain up trying to wonder why you’d bother.
Why not tell the therapist “ha! I’ve run circles around you logically”. Then you can all take your marbles and go home. End of story.

Shrug. Maybe they bother because the thrill of feeling smarter is really, really important to them. Or maybe the therapist touched on something painful and this is a “graceful” excuse to drop out?
To me the big question is, what sort of fascinating self-defeating mechanism is at play in a person who actively works to block others’ attempt to help? I’m not saying the therapist was any good… maybe they totally sucked…but if that was the issue, you’d just quit and maybe find someone better, rather than brag on and on about how brilliant you are.
Brilliance does not make you happy. Therapy does not need to be intellectually scintillating to help you change. I dunno. Not sure what it all means but it is interesting!
