Not to say there aren't more productive ways to convert religious people to atheism than mocking them, but I would rather be seen an asshole for calling people out on their bullshit than be dead. *(specifically, a "your god is the enemy of my god + I'll live in paradise when I die but you'll go to hell + all of nature was created by god for us to exploit" mindset) No, better than learning to work with religion is to learn to work without it. Obviously, I have no idea what will be meaningful for you or not, but that particular essay was pretty clear, if I recall. Which is why i have stuck with books - they're more for a lay audience than articles which I assume exist in academic journals, written for people in the field, and therefore beyond my ability to meaningfully read them. I don't know the technical vocabulary or concepts etc. Anyway he is brilliant and fascinating. But as a general rule I tend not to read much old stuff - not much interested in Kierkegaard. I'm content to read summaries by modern folk for the most part, particularly because religion is just a hobby of mine and not something I'm seriously into studying. Anyway I'm rambling. Yeah, there's some fanatics, but I've known some very nice Jehovah's Witnesses and we have some Mormon's playing L5R with us now in Chilliwack, not to mention a good portion of devout Christians that also play with us. These people have strong faith but don't try to force it on me, so I leave it alone. I don't agree with them, but I don't condemn them for it either. Trying to force atheism on someone would be just as bad as them trying to force religion on me.
