You will be pleased to note I have pulled myself out of my funk with the help of some tylenol and a good, stiff self-talking-to. Also there were hungry guests, which always fires my motor. Today I served clean out the vegetable drawer pasta with some sausage smeat added – it was passably received, though one young person unobtrusively picked around anything that resembled a plant and ate only noodles. This is fine by me – I have no interest in forcing anyone to eat anything they dislike and appreciate the gratitude implied by the lack of protest.

The sick bird is not looking very good. I have a control group of three other birds, same species, who are well and hopping around and beeping – the sick bird is crouching on his perch, feathers puffed up and breathing heavily. I think he looks worse than he did last night. I don’t know what to do for him other than make sure he has fresh food and water, warmth, and a calm environment. He will get his medicine on schedule. Beyond this, what do you do for a bird?

I really hope he doesn’t die!

This morning I gave medicine to a bird. We are both traumatized. It turns out it is incredibly difficult to catch a finch, even when it is in a tiny cage, because they are almost shockingly fast and, of course, motivated by what we could probably call the “holy shit a monster is trying to eat me FLEE” module. After the first few minutes of failed attempts I withdrew my arm from the cage and we both regrouped – the poor little guy was just heaving with breathing so hard from what is undoubtedly the terror of being pursued around a tiny cage by a big fleshy appendage.

But finally I nabbed him, performed the flip manouver, and dropped .12 mL of bird medicine into his tiny beak. Or at least I think it was .12 mL, seriously, at those measurements the margin for error is enormous.

I feel guilty for scaring the bejeesus out of a little sick bird, and he probably hates my guts. And we have to do it all again tonight. Oy!

PS: The birds eat this yellowish, grainy meal that I was poking at yesterday when the owners were dropping the birds off. Me: “And what is this stuff?” My cousin: “Ground up bugs.” Me: “…”

I am bird sitting. One of the birds is in quarantine for some kind of bird ailment that requires twice daily administration of medication. This requires that I reach into his cage and catch him, flip him over, and use a tiny dropper to get medicine into his little beak.

This should be interesting.

Today I was out and about fetching supplies for this evening when I saw a truly absurd sight: a woman was on the skytrain with her bicycle, which had a basket attachment on the front handlebars. The basket had a wire dome cage over the top. In the basket was a tiny, fluffy dog wearing – are you ready? – aviator goggles and a skullcap-style helmet.

In other news, my lettuces are probably ready to go into the beds now. THERE WILL BE LETTUCE.

And my friend Mel had her last day of work today and now joins the ranks of the unemployed after her company laid her off. It’s not exactly the sort of thing you congratulate someone on, but at the same time, freedom from work has its perks. So, I suppose I will wish her a good job search that secures her a great new job in about three or four weeks – far enough away to enjoy a well earned rest but not so long that it starts to get scary. Good luck Mel! They were fools to let you go.

And my freaking cactus is dying again. I water it, I don’t water it, I implore it, I shake my fist in rage at it – nothing helps. Might be time to go back on the patio for another Treatment.*

But now I am going out. I hope you have a great Friday! I plan to.

*Last year I threw the stupid thing outside on the deck in disgust when it became apparent it was dying – and prompty forgot it there, over winter, for four months. Come spring it was hale and hearty, and this after lying on its side in the drizzly Vancouver weather! What a fucker.

Today as I was walking to downtown I saw a woman and a man hand in hand. She had a black eye and bruises all over the fleshy part of her upper arms. Now I don’t know anything for sure, but I can’t help but suspect. And I didn’t smile back at the man.
